| The Mercer County Sheriff's Office is the largest law enforcement agency in the county and patrols all 569 square miles of the county. The department also provides police service to the city of Matherville by contract. The patrol division is supervised by Sheriff Tom Thompson and Chief Deputy Jeff Dale. Mercer County deputies patrol all areas of and respond to all calls for assistance within their jurisdiction and assist and cooperate with all local police department, Illinois State Police and other outside agencies. The patrol division is the most visible function of the Sheriff's Office. Deputies assigned to patrol perform several specialized duties including detectives, a K-9 unit, an accident investigator, evidence technicians, tactical officers, field training officers, firing range officers, juvenile officers and a hostage negotiator. At left, you will find a link to the Illinois State Police as well as contact information for other area police departments. If you are going to be away from your residence or business for an extended period of time, you may request extra patrol from the Mercer County Sheriff's Office.
